1975 FA Cup – West Ham
The Cup Final in 1975 was won by West Ham United. They beat then second division side Fulham at Wembley on May 3rd 2-0.
The Hammers started as favourites against their lower division opponents but their League form that season had been less than impressive. They finished mid-table having averaged less than 1 goal per game which belied the skill and experienced squad they had that included Trevor Brooking, Frank Lampard and Trevor Brooking who would all become West Ham legends.
Fulham had a very mature side that was captained by former England leader Alan Mullery but they also had a West Ham legend of their own in Bobby Moore who had left the Hammers the previous season.
The first half was a typical cagey cup final with few chances for either side. Opportunities were limited to corners and long-range shots but Mervyn Day in the West Ham goal and his opposite number Peter Mellor had little to do.
Shortly after the restart West Ham piled on the pressure and in a 5 minute spell striker Allan Taylor scored two nearly identical goals to snuff out the Fulham resistance. Mellor could only parry shots from first Billy Jennings then Graham Paddon with Taylor showing the strikers instinct to be in just the right position to sweep home the rebounds.
In a sharp contrast to the modern day all but one of the players were English with the odd-man-out being Fulham’s Irish midfielder John Conway. To this day the victorious West Ham side is the last all-England team to win the FA Cup.
