1987 FA Cup – Coventry City
The 1987 FA Cup Final between Coventry City and Tottenham Hotspur was one of the classic cup finals in terms of excitement. 5 goals were scored with Coventry twice coming from behind before grabbing the winner deep into extra-time.
Spurs finished 3rd in the First Division so started the Cup Final as favourites over Coventry who could only manage a mid-table finish in the top flight.
In just the 2nd minute of the match Spurs Chris Waddle crossed the ball into the penalty area where Clive Allen produced a telling heading that found the net. But the lead lasted just 7 minutes when Coventry leveled when Dave Bennett scored.
Spurs regained the lead just before half-time thanks to an unlikely goal from defender Gary Mabbutt. Midway through the second-half Coventry equalised for a second time through a wonderful diving header from Keith Houchen. There were no more goals and extra-time was required.
Six minutes into the extra period Mabbutt went from hero to villain when he scored a very unlucky own-goal after he deflected a powerful cross from the right past Ray Clemence and into the top corner of the goal.
Spurs couldn’t find a way through their opponents defence as Coventry hung on to win their first FA Cup Final.
