1994 FA Cup – Manchester United
The 1994 FA Cup Final was pitted Manchester United against Chelsea. United went into the final as Premier League champions and they were attempting to become only the fourth team of the 20th Century to complete the League and Cup “Double” and the first in their own history. Chelsea, on the other hand, were playing in their first major final since winning the FA Cup in 1970.
The Wembley pitch was wet on Cup Final afternoon and, in the first half, Chelsea were the better team. Gavin Peacock had the best chance of the opening 45 minutes when his half-volley hit the crossbar. In the second half, Manchester United took over with three goals in the space of nine minutes.
Just after the hour-mark United brought their wingers Ukrainian Andre Kanchelskis and Welshman Ryan Giggs into the game to great effect. Giggs weaved his way down the left and passed to Dennis Irwin inside the penalty area only to be fouled by Frank Sinclair. Frenchman Eric Cantona converted the penalty and United had the lead. Six minutes later it was déjà vu when Cantona again coolly converted a spot-kick following a penalty area trip on Kanchelskis. United 2-0.
Chelsea threw everything forward and tested Peter Schmeichel in the United goal but they went 3-0 behind on 69 minutes when Mark Hughes drove a low shot past the Chelsea keeper and into the net.
More pain was to follow in the last minute when Brian McClair accepted an easy chance set up by Paul Ince to make the final score 4-0.
This triumph was Manchester United’s eighth success in the competition, matching the record set by Tottenham Hotspur three years earlier.
