Barcelona win Champions League
Despite starting the 2009 Champions League Final as underdogs, FC Barcelona stunned Manchester United by beating them 2-0 in Rome’s Stadio Olympico.
Barcelona were without several key players owing to injury and suspension and their makeshift defence was expected to be split open by Ronaldo, Rooney, Tevez and Berbatov. But Barcelona skipper Carlos Puyol was brilliant in defence and the Catalonia side kept the EPL Champions and reigning Champions League holders at bay for the full 90 minutes.
Samuel Eto’o and Lionel Messi scored goals either side of half-time but to single those two out for special praise would be unfair on their team-mates, and particularly Xavi, who was simply awesome.
For once Cristiano Ronaldo could provide no magic of his own, instead getting increasingly frustrated as defeat loomed.
United Manager Sir Alex Ferguson was bitterly disappointed with his side’s performance but conceded that Barcelona were clearly superior on the night.
United fans still had a lot to be proud of this season as they picked a unique treble of cups. The World Club title, the domestic League Cup and the big one . . . the English Premier League title.

As a Man U fan I was very disappointed not just by the result but the performance as well. We should have done better.
Don’t feel too bad. Barcelona are a great side and really played well in the final. Your team still won more trophies than anyone else in the EPL. Thanks for the comment.
