Man United win thriller derby
The eargerly-awaited Manchester derby delivered everything and more particluarly for those fans wearing red football fanshirts. In a pulsating fixture at Old Trafford the red-devils won the match deep into stoppage time.
For the neutral observers the game was extremely entertaining from the 2nd minute when Wayne Rooney opened the scoring. Garreth Barry levelled the scoring at 1-1 in the 16th minute.
Darren Fletcher restored United’s lead in the 49th minute but it lasted just 3 minutes before Craig Bellamy edqualised for a second time.
Ten minutes from the end it looked like Darren Fletcher had won it for Man United when he scored but Craig Bellamy squeezed in a great shot from a tight angle to seemingly take a share of the points for City.
But a legendary end to a legendary game was achieved by a former Liverpool legend. Michael Owen assured that the Red Devils fans would accept him as he scored a very later winner running to a diagonal pass from Ryan Giggs. He turned the clock back to the early 2000’s by coolly slotting a low shot past Shay Given.
Mark Hughes was incredulous that 6 additional minutes had been added but the reality was that United had stung their rivals in the cruelest of fashion. In a season that promised so much for Manchester City this was the match they really wanted to win to assert their the improved status. It was their first loss of the season and although they are still well on track they were bitterly disappointed.
